Cannabis is the major illicit drug problem in Malawi, especially cultivation of cannabis as a cash crop in northern and central Malawi.
Cannabis production is thought to increase abuse among those involved in the growing as well as among youth living in cultivation regions.
At the same time this use of cannabis in cultivation areas is also associated with other societal problems , namely, disruption of subsitence farming and the associated loss of sustainable food supply.
At the same time use of other illicit drugs was percieved to be higher in the tourist regions around Lake Malawi.
The presence of tourists in this region creates a demand for drug abuse as well as the tourists brining in imported harder drugs.
