The Republic of mauritius is situated in the South-West of the Indian Ocean, approximately 2,400 km of the South-East coast of Africa. The Island is only 67 km in length and 46 km at its widest point. The republic not only inlcudes the Island of Mauritius but also the tiny island of Rodrigues, 563 km to the east, the Cargados Carjos Archipelago, and the two virtually uninhabited Agalega Islands
The main illict drug problem in Mauritius is gandia (cannabis) followed by "brown sugar" (heroin). The country has recognised the problem of heroin injection since the mid-1980s when several treatment centers were created to treat heroin abusers.
According to an Information, Needs and resources Analyses (INRA) survey for the Republic of Mauritius in April 2001, sponsored by the UNDCP Cocaine use is scarce, though unofficial reports indicate that amphetamine-related substances have only recently appeared in Mauritius.
