According to an Information, Needs and Resources Analyses (INRA) survey done for the development of national and regional integrated drug information systems in Southern and East Africa in 2001, alcohol abuse, and not illict drug use is the leading problem in the Seychelles.
The survey done in April 2001 expressed a particular concern over the use of home brews such as baka and lapire..
On the other hand illicit drug use comprises almost exclusively of cannabis the market of which is composed of locally grown cannabis plants as well as imported hashish.
Anecdotal evidence of use of amphetamine-type stimulants especially at discos coupled with occasional reports of cocaine and heroin use among drug users in treatment.
There are two main home brew preperations:
Other spirits, mostly rum though are also home distilled in the Seychelles. Production and sale of home brew is licenced under Seychelles law, but illicit production of these beverages still occurs.
