Tanzania has ratified all three major United Nations Conventions on drugs namely;

• The Single Convention on Narcotics, 1961
• The Conventions on Psychotropic Substance 1971
• The 1971 Protocol amending the 1961 Convention on Narcotic drugs and the Conventions against Illicit Trafficking on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances 1988

The country has also ratified two regional protocols namely

• SADC Protocol
• East Africa Protocol

Then in 1995 Tanzania enacted The Drug and Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Drugs Act no 9. This Act consolidated drug control laws and provided for the implemntation among other things of international conventions.

From this piece of legislation sprung the Interministerial Anti Drug Commission (IADC) for the coordination of drug control activities in Tanzania. This Commission is under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister with nine other members all of whom are ministers.
