| 'Time to go back to the basics on drug abuse instead of turning to simplistc answers to complex problem' The Standard, by David Ogot, June 25, 2005 |

THE country is expending a lot of passion and emotion on the issue of banning alcohol and tobacco advertisments, with Kenyans being polarised into camps of those for and those opposed to the ban
Others have even gone to court to get certain promotions withdrawn. So much money, so much energy, so much emotion being vented on the issue of drug abuse and saving Kenyan children, which should make me ecstatic. So why am I so depressed?
I am depressed because in five years of various groups, organisations and individuals trying to create awareness on the issues of alcohol and other drug abuse, I had hoped that some dent had been made in the ignorance and denial smothering Kenyans.
That somehow some understanding of the issues had begun to poke holes in this thick fog of denial, throwing light on the main weapon in fighting this absue, namely that parents had to re-take charge of their children.
