'There was a young man from Kenya...'

There was a young man from Kenya,
who really wasn't much of a drinker,
a beer or two,
was the best he could do,
usually that too at home after dinner.

Then along one day came a brewer,
with a competition for all to enter,
with a pppphhhhh and a pop,
look under the top,
and there a number to make you much richer!

Though our friend wasn't much of a drinker,
he was a logical, and quick thinker,
If in two months I drink more,
I might be able to score,
and so buy that farm I desire, much sooner.

And so he too like others, fell for the lure,
as the saying goes, hook, line and sinker,
as he drank and popped,
looking under the top,
knowing if not today, tomorrow he would be a winner.

'Kenyan "currency" devalued. Thousands weep!'

Thus the whole country was now on a 'bender',
with each drinker a valiant defender,
saying that the more that you drink,
the more chances to clinch,
the half-million bob winning number.

After a month of missing work, being sick and hangover,
and shaking hands or in kiswahili, mkono za kutetemeka,
five seven seven four,
opened the door,
and suddenly thousands of Kenyans were winners.

But alas they were soon to discover, pombe ni mbaya,
as in quick reverse gear went the brewer,
with an unexplained law,
that number we withdraw,
because who really cares about the consumer?

Flabbergasted the drinkers gnashed their teeth and spluttered,
you can't do that we have a bloody, binding contract,
but the brewer said "oh no,
we've slammed the door,
we're just too big, you can't touch us."

'does 'mawindo' ring any bells? Once bitten, twice...'

So finally this dejected young man from Kenya,
who initially wasn't much of a drinker,
his money 'kaput',
lost his job to boot,
went home thinner, and sober but much wiser!.
