GONORRHEA

Kenya government and other NGOs free condom programme with dispensers placed in toilets

Infectious disease involving chiefly the mucous membranes of the genitourinary tract, caused by gonococcus neisseria gonorrheae. A VENEREAL DISEASE, gonorrhea causes inflammation of the genital organs and urethra, and if untreated, sterility occurs. The disease is treated with ANTIBIOTICS especially PENICILLIN.

This disease is caused by a bacterium (singular form of bacteria) that infects the tissues of the reproductive system. This type of infection causes pain on urination and produces a discharge of pus at the site of entry. If untreated, the pathogen can spread to other parts of the body, causing damage to the heart and to the organs of the nervous system. Gonorrhea can also cause a form of arthritis in the joints and may result in sterility.

Gonorrhea can cause life-threatening complications during pregnancy. This extremely serious sexually transmitted disease can also cause blindness in a newborn baby. As a result, hospitals routinely treat a newborn baby’s eyes to prevent blindness caused by infection from gonorrhea.

The disease can be treated with certain antibiotics. One of the antibiotics commonly used in penicillin. However, not all gonorrheal pathogens respond to the same antibiotics. A physician is needed to diagnose the disease and prescribe treatment.
