| HERPES SIMPLEX |
|---|
Virus causing infection of the skin, characterized by one or more blisters filled with clear fluid which usually appears around the lips (cold sores) or on the genitals. The initial infection probably occurring during infancy or childhood subsequently becomes dormant.
The reappearance of blisters may be triggered by such factors as fever, exposure to sunlight, menstruation or pregnancy. Genital herpes, a type of Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD), can be treated with drugs.
