The most common viral disease that can be transmitted through sexual contact. It is more commonly known as herpes.

Herpes is a general name given to diseases that are caused by one group of closely related viruses. A virus called herpes simplex, type 1, normally causes the common and painful "cold sore" or "fever blister" on the skin of the face and upper body. An another virus (herpes zoster) that is part of this group causes chicken pox, a communicable disease more common in children than in adults.

The symptoms caused by herpes simplex type 2 may appear and then disappear, only to return at a later time. When the infection is in an active stage, the sores can be very painful. On rare occasions, the herpes simplex, type 2 can cause brain damage to a newborn baby of a woman with active herpes. This pathogen is also a suspected cause of cancer in the reproductive system At present, this form of herpes cannot be cured. Viral infections cannot be treated with antibiotics.
