Man has always had a need to move freely faster than his two legs can carry him. Movement gracefully and with little effort has been a constant goal.

Rollerskating is one of the novel ways that he came up with to achive this end. Rollerskating is also relatively cheap as compared to other forms of mobility and is extremely personal.

Here in Kenya it is also beginning to pick up including becoming a competetive sport. Several clubs have sprung up to help teach young people and others who are interested in how to skate whether for fun or competitively.

One of these clubs which is also very active in drug abuse awareness is the The Black Streak Skating Club based in Nairobi.

The Black Streak Skating Club is a non-profit making club that was started in January 2002 from the vision of three young men who came up with roller skating as a sport and a hobby with the aim of making skating popular. They also wanted to use skating as a hobby that would not only keep the youth fit, but keep them away from drugs and other vices which were promoted by idleness.

Skating is so much fun and attracts so much attention whenevr there are a group of skaters gliding by gracefully that they soon decided to use it as a powerful tool of community awarness getting not only whole communities involved but especially the youth in social issues including alcohol and other drug drug use awareness.

The club has grown steadily and they now have about fifty active members. As a new sport skating is also developing speedily in Kenya who this year hosted an international meet in the city center.

This is a great sport where one derives achievement, fitness, togetherness and a great deal of pleasure.

goinghomedotcom has been associated with covering this event since last year (2002) and is a firm believer that skating and roller-blading is going to go a long way as an alternate, affordable activity to keep youth off drugs. To this end we are working very closely with especially the Black Streak Skating Club.
