Respect people's right to not drink

Saturday Magazine - Saturday Nation April 3-9, 2004

The article by Dan Teng'o "The Teetolers Burden" should open Kenya's eyes to the fact that we are immersed in a dangerous alcohol drinking culture, one which reflects total ignorance of the populace on the nature of what they are drinking.

The fact that Kenyans, including women (who suffer the brunt of men's excesses with alcohol), could ask what business non-drinkers have going to clubs aptly exemplfies this ignorance.

Women who look with suspicion at men who do not drink should be cereful of what they wish for, as many women who are married to or, are in relationships with men who drink constanstantly ask God what they did wrong to deserve such punishment.

As for the belief that men who do not drink are womanisers-totally untrue. If a man is a womaniser, he will be so whether he is drinking or not - just as a murderer who is alcoholic and stops drinking still remains a murderer.

Contrary to popular belief, there are more non-drinkers than drinkers in Kenya and they are not weird or boring. But I needed to stop drinking to discover this. We all need to look at our drinking patterns but also the reason why we drink in the first place.

As for teetotallers, have no fear for many drinkers would love to be in your shoes but simply do not have the courage and energy to join your camp- a typical example of "sour grapes."
