STAR LETTER¹
One of the letters in your 'Mailbox' section a few weeks back entitled 'Gay Lifestyles Aren't
Important to Kenyans' clearly showed how out of touch with the reality on the ground the writer
was. Ms. Karuri says in part: "I have never read an article so far removed from the reality
of being Kenyan. Your article obviously involves less than 1 per cent of the Kenyan
population.". The way she contemptuosly throws in the word 'obviously' shows how much
thought she has given the subject. Does she have any statistics? Secondly, without going into
widely-reported cases in the local dailies of the situations in our prisons, if she was
conversant with the club scene in nairobi, she would know there are establishments that are
known gay hangouts. But what is more menacing is that this vice is taking place in our boarding
schools. We must accept that the problem is here and evidently getting worse. We should be
looking for ways to deal with it instead of getting into denial mode.
