Special Outreach Programmes run by the goinghomedotcom Trust:
Media Outreach

Being a trained journalist and producer, David Ogot Snr. the Programmes Director at the goinghomedotcom Trust long ago realised the power of the media to reach ordinary citizens wherever they were and to touch them in a way not possible in any other manner.

Whether through the print or electronic media this is a powerful force with which one can bring about great destruction or great change. The goinghomedotcom Trust has opted to use the power of the media for the latter cause and specifically in the field of alcoholism and other drug abuse.

To bring about awareness of alcoholism as a disease and so reduce the great stigma which not only surrounds alcoholism but all drug addiction, and which ultimately is the biggest single reason that prevents alcoholics and other drug addicts from seeking and getting into treatment.

The vast ignorance which surrounds the connection between alcohol and HIV/AIDS, other drugs and HIV/AIDS could also be corrected by proper use of the media. For alcohol is not perceived by many as a drug and yet it is more than all the other drugs combined the most devastating when it comes to HIV infection.

Kenyans are generally not aware of the problem facing them when it comes to alcoholism and other drug addiction nor the complexities involved. It is this situation that the Trust wants to rectify through the widespread use of the media being essentially a media-based non-governmental organization (NGO). It therefore seeks to :

  1. inform Kenyans of the problem through the various forms of media
  2. in a way that will explain the issues simply and without jargon
  3. in a manner that encourages or galvanises the reader, viewer or listener into action
  4. by using the stories of those who are successfully not only in recovery but are getting on productively with their lives.

A Media Resource Centre has also been established with books covering all aspects of media and all manner of writing for the Trust also teaches various aspects of media to recovering addicts who have an interest be it in photography, film, editing, journalism, web design, etc and these people are then incorporated in the Trusts’ activities while having acquired skills which allow them to earn a reasonable income elsewhere. A list of all materials available at the resource centre is available online at our website www.goinghomekenya.org

The goinghomedotcom Trust has therefore divided its media campaign into a four-pronged attack used the four main components of media namely: (a) Print, (b) Radio, (c) Television and (d) Internet.
