REFLECTIONS OF A RECOVERING ALCOHOLIC: AM I A SLAVE?

Slavery or bondage, captivity, enslavement, serfdom, servitude, subjugation, thralldom, thrall vassalage. Mankind has from time immemorial fought against the above in all its various forms both overt and hidden. And yet, never before in his history has he been so enslaved as he is in this a new millennium. A slavery of his own making, one which he cries out for freedom, has the keys for his jail and yet seems completely unwilling to open the egress and let himself out.

At the same time, millions of others are banging at the same door hollering to be allowed in; to become slaves, knowingly. I am talking about the slavery of alcohol, narcotic drugs and smoking. Thousands take alcohol and drugs to forget the daily drudgery of harsh days. Too much work, for too little money. The cases of so called 'kumi-kumi' (methanol poisoning in the local liquors) deaths and maiming by blindness are a case in point. People who are drinking to escape crippling drudgery and the daily battle to make ends meet.

But what of you in a good school, from a well-off family. Why do you wish bondage? With your good health and bright future ahead? What are you escaping from? Is it peer pressure to fit in and if so, to fit into what; Slavery? Is it revenge on parents you think are to busy to pay attention so you are trying to attract their attention or escape from the hurt their inattention has inflicted on you? Or is it mere experimenting? Could it be low self-esteem? Or is it because after becoming a slave to drugs, you are now a pusher to support your habit?

There is practically no human being that would want to be a slave yet slavery is where most end up with their use of alcohol and narcotic drugs.

So before you begin using, for whatever reason, think, think, think in what way it will improve your life, (health, image and finance and social impact) because nowadays, in this new 21st Century and new millennium, the sad, ugly, fact is WE HAVE BECOME SO 'FREE' THAT WE ARE THROWING OURSELVES BACK INTO SLAVERY!!!

Yours sincerely,
DAVID OGOT.

P.S. But remember I almost forgot to tell you. You have the key to Freedom.
You have the right to say NO!!
