| Why do so many young people become alcoholic? |
Reasons of course vary from individual to individual sometimes being a combination of numerous factors meating in one crucible and forming the tragic but perfect blender to pound out a young alcoholic.
But whatever the reason/s it all starts off with an inherited genteic predisposition, a bad body chemistry in as far as alcohol is concerned coupled with early experimentation and regular use. Into this combustible mix all one has to add is:
- Low self-image: Many young people feel worthless or unimportant thus the alcohol becomes a means to feel better about themselves
- Poor family support: Many parents soometimes to appear 'hip' or enlightened have rules for the childen which clash with each other causing constant disagreements forgetting that young children need constant rules with appropriate punishments during their teen years. Parents might also be so busy running after making a living 7quot;so that I can give you all the things i never had" that they ignore the emotional needs of their children as they grow. meanwhile the constant fighting over rules make children feel lost and angry
- Weak freindship skills making friends means not only reaching out, but knwoing how to reach out to others. It inlvolves being rejected in the process of leaning how to pick positive relationships and to maintain them. Everybody , every human being feels the need to belong and this is especially true of young people. They therefore often see alcohol consumption as a way of 'belonging.'
- Poor desision-making skills: How do you learn to evaluate what is right from what is wrong? There is no simple way and with peer preassure to do one thing and parent preassure not to, many youngsters find find the whole process to daunting and overwhelming and consequently try to find an escape.
- Inability to express feelings appropriately: Low self-esteem leads to several unpleasant emotions which confuse the young people as to eaxactly how they should handle them. To be angry and keep quiet, or fight or forgive? Acting tough when in reality one is scared are all unpleasant situations. Alcohol can temporarily mask these feelings
- Lack of purpose Who am I? What should I do with my life? What is the point of my life? What is my purpose in life? My life is hopless! What is the use? For many these are overwhelming questions and they find it easier to 'treat' themselves with alcohol rather than going round in circles trying to find the answers
